Spending Time With God

What if God said this to you: “I wanted so desperately to have a personal relationship with you that I died on the cross … I wanted you to be my child. I even reached out to you numerous times in your life, but you were always too busy to take the time to get to know Me.” That would hurt, wouldn’t it? In actuality, that’s what we do when we don’t carve out some time for Him every day.

I seriously doubt that God would let us get away with saying that we don’t know Him intimately because the pastor at the church didn’t tell us all about Him. Puleeeeze! Since no one else will do it for you, you need to take the initiative in your walk with Christ.

If we spend time with Him every day, we’ll grow in Christ and become spiritually mature. Studying the Word daily will keep our hearts and our eyes focused upon the Lord, where they need to be, and not upon things that are going on around us or in the world, which only serve as distractions that take us off the course that the Lord has plotted for us.

If your life is hectic, and time alone seems like a joke, take your Bible into the bathroom, close the lid on the toilet, and read His Word for a few minutes. If your family values privacy, no one, except the most daring, will pester you in there. Some people stay up a little later or get up a little earlier to have their time with God.

Personally, I like to read the Bible while I’m soaking in the bathtub. There, I can spend that precious one-on-one time with God.

Until next time…

Reading The Bible

Have you ever read a verse several times and it always sounded the same? What about when your pastor reads it in church…still the same? Try this: go by yourself and reread it. But before you do, pray that God, through His Holy Spirit, will help you understand what He wants to tell you and get ready. If you give God your undivided attention, He will teach you what He wants you to know. Quite often, via His Word, He will clarify something for me and answer questions that I didn’t realize that I had.

In A Funk

Have you ever just woken up in a funk, where everything seems blah? I did this morning. Nothing was wrong, exactly, but nothing seemed right. I tried to read my email, that didn’t help. I glanced over the front page of msn.com and not a thing looked interesting.

I glanced over at my Bible that was lying quietly on a shelf, waiting patiently for me to get back to it. Under normal circumstances, I read my Bible every day, but lately, while in a mad dash to submit my book to agents, I had been putting God on a back burner. Apologizing profusely to the Lord for doing such a terrible thing, I picked up my Bible and opened it up to where I had left off. This will be the third time I’ve read the Bible from beginning to end. The reason why I do this is so I can read everything from beginning to end and see how awesome that God really is, how faithful He really is, how true to His Word He always has been and always will be, and how much He really does love us.

I picked up my Bible and read Psalm 30 and 31 and now everything’s right again. Reading anything in my Bible has always made me feel better, no matter what's going on. It makes me feel closer to God. It reminds me that He's always with me no matter where I am.

Until next time...
